Indigenous Peoples May 2nd REVOLT at the United Nations PFII
Indigenous Peoples May 2nd REVOLT at the United Nations PFIIby Rebecca Sommer.Indigenous Peoples representatives and organizations held a protest at the May 2 2008 conclusion of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) in the United Nations headquarters, in New York. They were angered by the final Report of the Permanent Forum on Climate Change, which ignored Indigenous Peoples stated concerns about carbon trading projects (REDD), Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) . During the two weeks of the UNPFII, Indigenous community representatives strongly objected, and testified about the injustices associated with the clean development mechanism projects and asked that the UNPFII not promote the projects in the name of over 400 Million Indigenous peoples from around the world. However,in the final report of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigneous issues the voices of Indigenous Peoples were ignored. The final report of the UNPFII hails World Bank-funded carbon trading as "good examples" of partnership and have been imposed on Indigenous peoples leaders -against their will. The protesting Indigenous representatives had to face UN security aggressions, until, at the final moment, they were allowed to state for a last time their objection s on the floor, before the UNPFII moved on with their shameful business- to pave the way for the World Banks plans by promoting them " good pracise" initiatives, in the name of Indigenous Peoples, but without their blessing.
