The World Bank’s policies, programmes and projects have never been explicitly or deliberately aimed towards the realisation of human rights. The Bank rather sees its role in creating conditions that allow the attainment of the right to water and sanitation. In fact, in practice the use of human rights principles can strengthen existing approaches to water supply and sanitation delivery. It is an important ancillary approach that emphasizes the role of governance within a broader framework for action.  ...more »

The training will be conducted by Jose Luis de la Bastida, a petroleum engineer from Ecuador, former Oxfam America extractive industries intern, and MA candidate at Ameican Univeristy in Global Environmental Policy.

In 2008, agricultural commodity prices on world markets reached their highest levels in 30 years. From 2002, agricultural commodity prices started to climb slowly, defying decades of a trend of falling commodity prices, interrupted by short-lived, supply-related price spikes. Initially, governments were not too alarmed. But by late 2007, grain prices were reaching record levels and a number of governments started to panic.
